Chelsea are in the market for a striker and Thomas Tuchel has his preferred targets, according to reports.

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel would reportedly prefer to sign Romelu Lukaku and Kylian Mbappe than Erling Haaland this summer. Chelsea are one of a host of clubs linked with a move for Borussia Dortmund frontman Haaland. Manchester United and Manchester City, as well as La Liga giants Barcelona and Real Madrid, are also interested in signing the Norwegian.

Chelsea are in the market for a striker, with Olivier Giroud’s contract expiring this summer and Tammy Abraham clearly not fancied by Tuchel.

Timo Werner has struggled in front of goal in his first season at Stamford Bridge and has been used off the left for the majority of the time under Tuchel.

Inter Milan star Lukaku was linked with a shock return to Chelsea last month following a prolific season in Italy.

Paris Saint-Germain’s Mbappe sees his contract expire next year and has also been linked with a transfer this summer.

Transfer expert Ian McGarry claims Tuchel would prefer the style of Lukaku and Mbappe to Haaland, and says the departing Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero could also be an option for the Blues.

“Tuchel prefers the playing style of Romelu Lukaku, and also Kylian Mbappe, although Mbappe wants to go to Real Madrid,” McGarry said on the Transfer Window podcast.

“And there certainly is a possibility that Sergio Aguero may well become the preferred candidate, given that he is on a free transfer, and has that ability, as long as he stays fit, to get in behind defences and go on on one.”

McGarry says Chelsea chiefs also believe a deal for Haaland would be too expensive.

He added: “It is our information that Chelsea will prioritise the signing of a striker in the next window, and by that I mean an actual No 9, something they are slightly short of in terms of strikers who have achieved goal tallies which are expected of a club who can challenge for major trophies.

“So, is it going to be Erling Haaland? Well, our information coming from sources who are very senior at the club is that Haaland is just basically too expensive.

“Remember that Chelsea spent £230million on players in the last 18 months.

“Haaland would cost around €150m in transfer fee, and then you’ve got his wages to include, and also a commission for both Mino Raiola his agent and his father Alf-Inge Haaland, which could take the entire package over the course of the five-year contract to somewhere between £350m or £400m.

“So you’re looking at twice the budget that Chelsea paid for five new players in the last 12 months for one single player.”
