Thomas Tuchel explains why he dropped Timo Werner for Christian Pulisic vs Crystal Palace
Thomas Tuchel admitted he has concerns that he’s at risk of ‘overusing’ Timo Werner, which is why he dropped the Chelsea forward against Crystal Palace.Tuchel made three changes from his side’s 2-0 Champions League win against Porto in midweek, with Kurt Zouma, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic all recalled to the starting XI.
Pulisic replaced Werner in the starting line-up, with Reece James and the injured Andreas Christensen dropping out, while Thiago Silva is suspended after being sent off in the shock 5-2 defeat to West Brom a week ago. Explaining the decision to drop Werner and replace him with Pulisic, Tuchel told Sky Sports: ‘It’s to do with form and work-rate.
With Timo, we are close to overusing him and there’s no point in doing that. Christian is in good form so I want to have the competition for the position.
We haven’t made many changes in formation or individual positions but we hope Christian can show up and challenge in an offensive formation.
He added: ‘We need to have a reaction today and we expect a tough match here but we’re confident. We are overall on a good run and we need to restart in the league.
‘There are not a lot of changes because of that and we cannot give the impression to rest players for Tuesday. Today is the most important game and we have a lot to win.’
Crystal Palace are unchanged after their 1-1 draw with Everton, with former Blues stars Gary Cahill and Patrick van Aanholt both selected.
Michy Batshuayi – on loan from Stamford Bridge – is ineligible.
