Romelu Lukaku reveals how he pushed through transfer to Chelsea

Romelu Lukaku has revealed the details of how his move to Chelsea came to fruition – stating that he requested the transfer back to his old club.

The Belgian forward had previously spent time at Stamford Bridge, playing just 15 times in all competitions before being sent out on loan to West Brom and Everton – eventually being sold to the latter in 2014.

Now, 10 years on from his first Chelsea tenure, Lukaku is back the club following his £97.5m move from Inter.

According to Lukaku (via HLN), the transfer back to Chelsea was one which he pushed for in the summer – even asking Simone Inzaghi to work out a deal to send him to Stamford Bridge.

“With Chelsea’s third offer, I knew it was serious and I wasn’t there [at Inter] anymore,” he said. “Chelsea offered €110m plus [Davide] Zappacosta, but Inter said no, so I went to [Simone] Inzaghi’s office asking to find an agreement.

“I told [Simone] Inzaghi: ‘Inter pulled me out of sh*t, but I want to leave only because of Chelsea.”

Inter were understandably not keen to let Lukaku go on the cheap this summer. Last season the forward was the key man behind Inter winning their first Scudetto since 2010 – scoring 24 league goals and winning Serie A’s MVP award.

And Lukaku has continued that fine form since returning to the Premier League, scoring on his second debut against Arsenal.

The forward is set to make his second home debut for the Blues on 11th September when Aston Villa take on the European champions at Stamford Bridge.
