The Belgian continued his hot start to his second spell in west London by scoring his first goal in European competition for the club.
He has now found the net four times since completing his £97.5million move from Inter Milan, already showing why Chelsea paid such an incredible amount of money for his services.
His performances are earning him the highest praise, including from the likes of Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand, and former Blues star, Joe Cole.
The duo had nothing but good things to say about the 28-year-old on BT Sport after the game, and they think his signing will make a real difference this year, particularly now that he is the main man at the club.
“There was no other player going to get the game over the line than that man Romelu Lukaku. He’s now become the talisman in this team, the go-to-guy,” said Ferdinand.
“This guy has ice in his veins, give him it and he’ll deal with it. He’s the man now. He’s the man at Stamford Bridge, [the man] they look for to win the game.”
Cole followed up Ferdinand’s analysis by comparing Lukaku to Didier Drogba.
“The crossover with Drogba, the comparisons are inevitable,” he said.
“What I’m seeing from him now, he’s taking a leadership role. He’s a big guy so he has stature but his presence on the pitch you can see him talking. That crossover with Drogba, he has watched him and seen what a leader he was, he obviously feels for the club so it’s a match made in heaven because he’s a package.”
Cole thinks that Lukaku will go on to be the top goalscorer in the Champions League ahead of Robert Lewandowski – who incidentally found the net twice for Bayern Munich against Barcelona last night.
But given Lukaku’s form in front of goal, Cole’s prediction is likely to be a popular one among the Chelsea faithful.
