Predicted Chelsea line-up vs Manchester City: Counter-attacking 3-4-3 system without Havertz

Chelsea will still be without two key players for Saturday’s FA Cup semi-final clash with Manchester City, and not many changes expected from the last game.

The two absentees, as Thomas Tuchel confirmed in his press conference, are Mateo Kovacic and Andreas Christensen.

Kovacic’s injury means Tuchel is likely going to keep Jorginho and N’Golo Kante in midfield, with Billy Gilmour on the bench.

Similarly, the Chelsea manager also has Thiago Silva as a clear option for the middle centre-back spot amid Christensen’s absence.

On the right side of the pitch, Reece James is likely to keep his wing-back spot, thanks to his defensive qualities, ahead of Callum Hudson-Odoi.

The possible changes would be among the front three, depending on how Tuchel wants his team to play.

Big decisions for attacking spots

Mason Mount is arguably one of the first names on the team sheet, but the other two spots could be up for grabs.

In last month’s 1-0 win over Liverpool, Tuchel opted for a more aggressive, counter-attacking football with Timo Werner up front, and Hakim Ziyech and Mount behind him.

It is easy to see why Ziyech’s passing range and Werner’s pace would complement each other in counter-attacking situations.

Although, it was Kante’s long ball and a moment of individual brilliance from Mount that eventually secured the win at Anfield.

On the other hand, Christian Pulisic and Kai Havertz have played really well recently — the former, in particular — and arguably deserve to keep their spots.

Pulisic also has a similar quick burst of pace that Werner offers, albeit from a deeper position.

Havertz’s tendency to drop deep could help Chelsea win the midfield battle, but does not possess the same counter-attacking threat that his fellow German does.

Tuchel could also go with a natural No.9 such as Olivier Giroud or Tammy Abraham, but based on recent games, it seems unlikely.

Predicted Chelsea 3-4-3 line-up:

James  Kante – Jorginho – Chilwell
