Pep Guardiola makes major Liverpool assumption and snubs Chelsea in Champions League title claim

Pep Guardiola has delivered his verdict on the team or teams who can stop his Manchester City side from steamrollering all before them.

And only one team sprang to mind immediately when he was asked that very question and it wasn’t Chelsea.

Barring a miracle at the Etihad Stadium, City already have both feet in the Champions League quarter-finals after the first leg of their last 16 encounter with Sporting CP.

Guardiola’s men smashed the Lisbon side 5-0 away from home on Tuesday night and can seemingly afford to play the kids in the second leg and give the first team a night off.

It was an extraordinary display in which City flexed their muscles and sent a message to the rest of Europe that they are here to win the Champions League for the first time.

So who can stop them from claiming the Premier League and Champions League double? Only Liverpool it seems, although Guardiola did eventually offer a couple of other names who could stop them in the Champions League, but once again, Chelsea were not mentioned.

Quizzed by former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel on CBS Sports after the game against Sporting, when asked which team could beat Man City, Guardiola replied: “Liverpool.”

And then he made one massive assumption.

He continued: “They are six points behind us. Liverpool [have been] our biggest rivals over the last seasons, they are always there.”

Except Liverpool are not six points behind City, they are nine points behind. What Guardiola has done here is assumed that the Reds would win their game in hand to go six behind.

That may be the case of course, but it’s not quite accurate just yet.

Guardiola went on to say: “They are a fantastic team in Europe. Just take a look – PSG today, they played really well against Real Madrid.

“Inter Milan, Liverpool, Man United are in this competition.”

So are Chelsea, Pep, you know, the current European and World champions.
