Barcelona made it clear that they were happy to let the star leave this January after talks over a new contract stalled, and the player that once cost them £135million would be able to walk away for free at the end of the season.
But out of nowhere, after a quiet window, Chelsea could be about to sign Dembele, with a deal ’99 per cent done’.
That’s according to Spanish outlet ABC, who have claimed that a move to Chelsea is all-but done, after Paris Saint Germain pulled out of a deal to sign the 24-year-old.
It was suggested that PSG would sign the Frenchman if they could negotiate a deal to allow one of their stars to move in the other direction, but Barcelona were insistent that they wanted a straight transfer fee of £16m.
The report claim that Dembele will undergo a medical ahead of a move to Chelsea with just hours left of the January transfer window, and it could potentially reignite a deal to bring Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to the Nou Camp.
Barcelona wanted to re-sign Dembele to a new deal, but due to financial concerns the club wanted the star to take a wage reduction, as fellow Frenchman Samuel Umtiti agreed to do.
However, this wasn’t well received by Dembele and his team, and Barcelona told the star to find a new club on Deadline Day.
It appears that a move to Chelsea is now on the cards, as Thomas Tuchel looks set to make a late addition to what was previously a quiet window at Stamford Bridge.
