Mendy, Kante, Kovacic - Chelsea team news and injury updates ahead of Man City clash

With Chelsea having wrapped up a top four finish on the final day of the Premier League campaign on Sunday afternoon, attention now switches to Saturday’s UEFA Champions League final against Manchester City.

The two clubs will fly out to Portugal later this week ahead of the clash in Porto, with Chelsea looking to earn their first trophy of the Thomas Tuchel era, whilst City will be looking to lay their hands on the Champions League crown for the first time in their history.

Whilst City will enter the contest brimming with confidence after hammering Everton 5-0 on Sunday afternoon, ensuring they completed their Premier League title-winning season with a bang, Chelsea limped home in fourth, suffering a final day defeat to Aston Villa.

However, Chelsea did just enough over the course of the season to bag a top four finish, meaning they will compete in the Champions League next season regardless of the outcome of Saturday evening’s contest.

Tuchel was without a key member of his squad at Villa Park in the name of N’Golo Kante. He also lost goalkeeper to Edouard Mendy to injury at half time.

With the German facing one or two troubles on the injury front, here is a round-up of all the very latest Blues team news and injury updates ahead of Saturday’s showpiece event.

Edouard Mendy

Already a goal down and facing the prospect of missing out on Champions League qualification for next season, Chelsea’s cause was not helped when goalkeeper Mendy was forced off at half time against Villa with a problem with his ribs.

The Senegal international, who has been in inspired form for the Blues this season, was forced off at the break after clattering into the goal frame. After the game, Tuchel insisted that he would have to wait and see what condition he would be in ahead of the weekend.

However, when speaking to the media on Monday afternoon, the German was able to provide a much more positive-looking diagnosis.

Tuchel explained: “The latest update is we still have hope that he joins training on Wednesday, that he joins the group. He has made a huge improvement in his management of pain and so we need further updates on Wednesday.

“We hope to have him back then.”

N’Golo Kante

French midfield enforcer Kante missed the defeat against Dean Smith’s side because of an ongoing hamstring complaint, which forced him off in the first half against Leicester City a week ago this evening.

He was touch-and-go in the build-up to the clash in the Midlands but, ultimately, it came too soon for him.

Issuing a fresh update on the former Foxes midfielder’s fitness on Monday, Tuchel confirmed that “nothing has changed” and if he trains successfully later this week he will start against City.

“With N’Golo nothing has changed,” Tuchel confirmed. “I think about changing my tactics now and stop asking about N’Golo.

“I’ll just put him on the pitch in Wednesday training and don’t ask anymore. If there are any problems we will just put him in training and put him on the pitch when the game starts on Saturday.”

Fortunately, as things currently stand, Mendy and Kane are the only two that Tuchel has any great concerns over, with the rest of his squad in a good state of health.

Despite Cesar Azpilicueta being sent-off against Villa he is available for selection, with his suspension only concerning domestic matters, whilst Mateo Kovacic and Jorginho are both fine, with their second half withdrawals against Villa purely being down to tactical reasoning.
