Erling Haaland signs, N'Golo Kante's contract sorted - the ideal Chelsea summer transfer window

The summer transfer window swings into action on Wednesday and Chelsea are expected to make moves to build on the early success that has been delivered by Thomas Tuchel.

Chelsea will be looking to progress on their sensational Champions League success in May with Tuchel at the helm, beating Man City 1-0 in the final in Porto to secure a second European crown in nine years.

There isn’t much need for wholesale changes to the Blues squad but head coach Tuchel will be looking to make his own mark on it, having inherited the players from Frank Lampard when he was parachuted into rescue the season in late January.

Tuchel’s switch to a five-man defence and his preferred “double six” in midfield worked wonders. While goalscoring was a bit of an issue, Chelsea’s defensive record under Tuchel was immense and meant that quite often, one or two goals was always enough.

It’s that goalscoring department that Tuchel is expected to focus heavily on this summer, with the Blues chasing a new frontman despite the arrival of Timo Werner this time last year. Olivier Giroud has signed a one-year contract extension but whether he is still at the club at the start of the new season remains to be seen.

Chelsea have been linked with big-money moves for Erling Haaland and Romelu Lukaku in a bid to solve their goal scoring issue, while the club is reportedly looking at bolstering at right back with a move for Inter’s Achraf Hakimi.

West Ham midfielder Declan Rice continues to be linked with a return to Stamford Bridge having been released from Cobham as a 14-year-old and joining the Hammers, where he led them to European football in 2020/21 having established himself as one of the best defensive midfielders in the country at the age of 22.

Roman Abramovich is expected to back Tuchel with some funds this summer having handed the German a two-year contract extension as he looks to reel in City in the domestic game, having surpassed them on the continent.

So, what would be the ideal transfer window for Tuchel and Chelsea?

Signing Erling Haaland would be the biggest move of all. With Harry Kane looking to leave Spurs, Man City are the team in the driving seat to sign him though it’ll take £150million for that to happen.

City and Chelsea are arguably the only two clubs around that could afford either Kane or Haaland and with Spurs unlikely to deal with their London rivals, all roads lead to Haaland.

Dortmund are insisting on not letting their star striker leave this summer, with Jadon Sancho more likely to depart and join Manchester United but meet their asking price and you never know, they could be swayed.

Tuchel is believed to be a big admirer of Declan Rice, who was a target for the Blues when Frank Lampard was in charge. Rice would slot in seamlessly into the Chelsea lineup alongside N’Golo Kante and his versatility to play at centre half if needed would be a huge plus for Tuchel.

What that would mean for the futures of Jorginho, who had a strong end to the season, and Mateo Kovacic remains to be seen.

Getting Kante penned down to a new contract as well would be a major move for the club. The 30-year-old is out of contract in 2023 and being one of the best midfielders on the planet, the Blues need to get their talisman locked down for the long-term.

Signing Haaland and Rice would be a near-perfect window for Tuchel and the Blues. Another left back might not go amiss with the futures of Marcos Alonso and Emerson up in the air.

In terms of outgoings, Chelsea do have a somewhat bloated squad and Tuchel will likely want to get that under control. The head coach will no doubt want to have a look at some returning players, such as Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ethan Ampadu and others before deciding what to do and where he trims his squad.
