‘A lot of joy’: Paul Merson backs Chelsea duo to cause Liverpool 30-year-old problems

Paul Merson backs Chelsea duo to cause Liverpool 30-year-old problems

Paul Merson has backed Chelsea duo, Kai Havertz and Christian Pulisic, to cause Liverpool’s Joel Matip problems during their Carabao Cup final clash, as he told Soccer Saturday on Sky Sports.

The Sky pundit made it clear that he wouldn’t start Romelu Lukaku against Liverpool and thinks Pulisic can have some ‘joy’ down Matip’s side if it’s Havertz playing instead of Chelsea’s out-of-form striker.

All eyes are on whether Thomas Tuchel starts Lukaku at Wembley because he has had a torrid time in front of goal of late.

Last week, the Belgian only managed seven touches during Chelsea’s 1-0 win at Crystal Palace, which then saw him drop to the bench for his side’s win against Lille in the Champions League in midweek.

Even though Chelsea are preparing for a domestic final showdown against the Reds, Merson made it clear why Lukaku wouldn’t make his XI.

“No, I wouldn’t (start Lukaku),” said Merson. “Havertz will always play for me. I think he gets into nice little pockets.

“If you play Lukaku up against Virgil van Dijk, I don’t see there being a lot of change, with Havertz he causes them a problem.

“With him dropping in, and hopefully Pulisic is fit, then he can have a lot of joy against Matip down that side if Havertz can get on the half-turn and play.

“Trent Alexander-Arnold is going. He’s bombing forward. If you can get the ball out there to Pulisic on one v one situations against Matip, then I think they could have a nice day at Wembley.”

It needs to be remembered that Lukaku didn’t feature the last time Chelsea and Liverpool locked horns.

At that time, his outspoken interview with Sky Italia had just been released and he was dropped for the 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge, as a result.

The European Cup holders were more fluid in their attacking play during that game and will probably feel they should have secured the three points.

Perhaps Tuchel will have an eye on that and feel that he is better off leaving his star striker on the bench.
